Improving Wireless Signal in your Office

Use Tools to Analyze your Office Wireless Network

Using an app called WiFi Analyzer for Android,  you can  walk around your office and see where you get the best signal and where the signal is weakest.

You can often  move your router slightly trying to get the best signal propagation through the office, replace antenna, or range-extend your wireless network.

Wireless Router Positioning

Typically , a wireless router should be centrally located in your office to insure the best range possible. Place the router on a flat surface off the floor and away from obstructions.

Avoid Interference From Other Wireless Networks

Interference from other wireless networks in the area can cause issues with your wireless signal. To determine whether interference is occurring, use WiFi Analyzer to sniff out the best frequencies and channels

If multiple wireless networks are competing for the same channel, this can cause problems. To fix this, you can change the wireless channel in your router. Even if you don’t have access to a WiFi Analyzer – change the signal to a different channel and then check if your wireless connection improves.

Avoid Interference From Appliances

A variety of appliances can cause wireless interference, including cordless phones and microwave ovens. Cordless phones using the 2.4 Ghz frequency will interfere with wireless networks. Microwave ovens and wireless networks operate on nearly the same electromagnetic frequency (between 2.4 and 2.5 GHz). Problems with cordless phones can be solved by replacing cordless phones with phones that operate on a different frequency, such as 900 MHz or 1.9 GHz.  Check your microwave oven for an energy leak and replace with newer one if necessary.

Reposition or Replace Antenna

The antennas shipped with most routers are small antennas with omni-directional capabilities. These antennas broadcast a signal in all directions. Position the  antenna vertically, so that the antenna is standing straight up. A directional antenna, often called “high-gain”, can improve range by focusing the signal in a specific way, allowing you to aim it where it’s needed.

Install Wireless Repeater

If you need to cover a large area with a wireless signal and your router just isn’t cutting it, a wireless repeater (aka range extender) is the easy and safe way to boost your signal. A repeater is easy to install and doesn’t require any additional wires or connections. Multiple repeaters make it easy to create an office network with complete coverage
